Gerona


Girona airport is promoted misleadingly as Barcelona Gerona in spite of the 90km which separate the two Catalan cities. As a result a large number of arrivals are immediately rushed off to Barcelona city without spending any time in Gerona.

Others arrive here and transfer to their resorts on the Costa Brava. If your schedule allows then you really should try to spend some time in Gerona itself which is one of Spain's most attractive cities.

The city's main historical attractions include its Roman ruins, the charming small streets of its Jewish quarter, the Arab Baths and the magnificent cathedral which dominates the whole city from high above the Onyar River.

Many visitors arrive on day trips from Barcelona or from the many resorts of the Costa Brava. Many of these excursions combine Girona with a visit to Figueres to the north where the world famous Dali Museum is located.

Girona was recently voted the Spanish city with the best quality of life in a survey carried out by the national newspaper, El País, and is well worth a visit from the tourist point of view.

Girona Airport lies 12 kilometres from the city of Gerona and and is well linked by taxi services. There is also an airport bus that connects with Gerona's central bus and train station.

Girona Airport to Barcelona

If you're using Gerona airport as a gateway to Barcelona then do bear in mind that it's a 100km journey and the cheap fares involved in getting to Gerona may be offset by the costs of transfers from Gerona airport to Barcelona. And that's not taking into account the time spent transferring between cities. flights to Spain section in case there's a comparable deal directly to Barcelona's El Prat airport which is located about 12km from the city center.

Barcelona Bus

From Girona airport there is a Barcelona Bus running to the center of Barcelona (70 min) which operates immediately after flight arrivals. This service is run by a local bus company called Sagalés whose timetable is determined by the expected arrival time of Ryan air flights.

It is NOT provided by Ryan air themselves so don't assume that a Ryan air flight will wait for you if you are on this bus heading back for Gerona, it wont! The cost of the service is €21 return. Their timetables (in Catalan) appears online.

Once you arrive in the Barcelona's main bus terminal, (Carrier d'Ali Bei 80) you can walk about 10 minutes to the Arc De Triomf metro station from where you can travel anywhere in the city.

RENFE Train to Barcelona

An alternative to the Barcelona Bus is to head into Gerona by bus or taxi then take one of the frequent trains that run to Barcelona Sants station. You can find train time tables for this route in English on the RENFE website. A taxi into Gerona takes about 30 minutes and will cost about €20.

Girona Airport Car Rental
