Tower Bridge is without a doubt the acknowledged symbol of London. In the second half of the 19th century London’s East End rapid development led to the increased need for a new bridge over the river Thames. Tower Bridge was designed by Wolfe Barry and Horace Jones and it took 8 years to build it. It was finally finished in 1894.

The roadway can be raised when big ships have to pass through. Tower Bridge used to be raised every day but nowadays it is raised only a couple of times a week and 24 hours' notice is required. Tower Bridge derives its name from the Tower of London which is on the north bank of the river.
