Brisbane is fast becoming the Australian capital for culture and there are certainly a wide selection of attractions to explore.
Its theatre and arts are becoming a Mecca for Australians so what are the best Brisbane Attractions?
Brisbane's Culture Scene
The most impressive aspect to Brisbane is its cultural life which is fast becoming very sophisticated indeed. Brisbane has been responsible for hosting some fantastic International exhibits and performances that have not been seen anywhere else in Australia. These include The Art Gallery which showed and exclusive collection on American Realist and Impressionist paintings from New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Dancers from the Paris Opera Ballet also performed here in Brisbane which was an Australian premiere.
Brisbane and Brisbane attractions has been well known for its theatre scene for some time now. The community theatre at Brisbane Arts Theatre is a great way for the locals to be involved both on and off the stage. Here you can see some classic plays.
For more contemporary theatre, go to the Riverside Powerhouse theatre. There is usually some comedy or a cabaret to enjoy or something very alternative.
For something that the kids will enjoy, go to the Sciencecentre on the Southbank. This is an interactive museum with lots of fun things to explore. There is an area where live demonstrations take place and the exhibition on the body is very popular.
But it doesn't just have to be about culture - even if you are not a culture vulture there are plenty of other Brisbane attractions
Explore Brisbane’s Architecture
Between Queens street and the Botanical Gardens you will find some of Brisbane’s oldest buildings and Brisbane attractions. Check out the old Treasury building which is now the casino, The Commisariat Store on Williams street which used to be an old bakery and is now a museum.
The oldest building and one that should be part of your Brisbane travel, is located on Albert Street in Wickham Park and is a windmill. It was built by convicts in 1829 to grind corn in the early settlement. It now stands empty and is known by the locals as the Observatory.
Explore the South Bank Area
The Southbank Parklands is a beautiful part of the city where you can walk along the riverfront under shady trees. There is also a man-made beach here including a salt water pool where you can sunbathe and cool down (pictured below.) Make use of the public barbeques and enjoy a picnic. Definitely a must vist of your Brisbane attractions.
Little Stanley street is great for Al Fresco dining and people watching.
There is also Brisbane’s Open Air Cinema here in Southbank Parklands during the summer months. Tickets get booked up early so book on line in advance.
Enjoy the Arts and Culture Centre
North of the Southbank Parklands is the culture area and a must visit Brisbane attractions. It has the Queensland Museum, State Library, State Art Gallery and Performing Arts Complex. It’s one of Brisbane’s key tourist areas. You can get here by crossing Victoria Bridge or taking a train or bus.
Check out what special exhibitions are on whilst you are here particularly at The Art gallery and Performing Arts Complex. You can often see International artists and performers as well as local talent.
Head to Boundary Street in the West End for some fantastic food, including Greek, Italian and Asian.
Hit the shops
Queen street mall is in the heart of the centre and is best for shopping, It is a pedestrianised zone, offering a variety of shops and cafes etc.
Or you can head to one of the upmarket suburbs like Paddington. This is a great area for Antique shops and there is a great antiques centre in a converted cinema.
Party in Fortitude Valley
If you like live music or want to hit the clubs and pubs then this is the place for you. There are also some excellent restaurants including Brisbane’s Chinatown. Brunswick street has lots of pubs and clubs and there is a market in the mall on Saturdays.
This place is very eclectic and can be a bit rough on a Saturday night so keep an eye on your belongings!

Visit the Botanical GardensThis is a great park in which to relax and get out of the city itself. There are guided walks most days between 11am and 1pm where you can see Bunya pines and part of the old rainforest.
