Meghalaya is a very small hilly state in North-Eastern India. Most of the state is under dense forest cover, which makes easy transport through the state very difficult. This has dented the tourism potential of Meghalaya to a certain extent, but forested region is a blessing in disguise. It invites different types of birds and animals, which not only support the environment, but also bring in tourists who prefer adventure instead of plain sight seeing.

The main occupation of the people here is agriculture, with crops like potato and rice being grown in bulk in the state. The industrial sector is developing slowly with numerous companies finding business potential here.


Meghalaya could be one of the more tourist friendly states of the seven sisterly states. There is a lot of tourism potential here, with Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya leading the tourism industry all the way.


Shillong is the only major city in Meghalaya which has three districts in the Khasi, Garo and Jaintia hills. Most of the districts are forested areas, while Shillong has the maximum population. 
 
SHILLONG IN MEGHALAYA
It is the capital city of the state of Meghalaya. Situated at an altitude of 1496m above the sea level, it is a well known hill station and a popular tourist destination across the country. This place was named the ‘Scotland of the East’ by the Britishers. Located 56kms from Cherrapunji, the wettest place on earth, it creates a perfect atmosphere with wonderful lakes and waterfalls for the visitors. To reach Shillong, Guwahati is the nearest airport and railway station. By road, it is connected to every part of Meghalaya. The best season to visit this place is during the month of October-March.

TURA IN MEGHALAYA
It is located as a town in the Garo hills surrounded with scenic natural beauty. Situated at about 2,500 ft above the Tura town, it is basically a peak in Meghalaya and headquarters of the West Garo hills. River Brahmaputra is flown through the Tura town towards Bangladesh. Guwahati is the main airport and railway station to reach this place. By road, it is laso well connected to almost all the places in Meghalaya. The month of October to March is the best period to visit Tura Peak.

NONGSTOIN IN MEGHALAYA
Nongstoin is located about 93 kms from Shillong. A very unique stone embroided with natural color is found here which makes this place special from others. Earlier this city was the known for its famous saw mill and the log works associated with it. Khasi hills are only some distance away from Nongstoin. Jakrem, Ranikor are the nearest places of attraction. By air route, Shillong Barapani is the nearest airport and Guwahati is the closest railhead. Road transports are always available through bus services. This place can be visited throughout the year.

NONGPOH IN MEGHALAYA
It is situated in East Khasi hills and forms a portion of it. it has a very pleasant climate due to which it was considered once a good halting place for tourists visiting shillong. Thick green forest and beautiful lakes make it a tourist holiday spot of Meghalaya. It is located 53 kms from shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya. CHERRAPUNJI IN MEGHALAYA
Cherrapunji is located at a distance of 60 kms from the capital city of Meghalaya, Shillong. Situated at an altitude of 4,500 ft above the sea level, it is popularly known as the wettest place in the world. It has been named in the Guinness book of world records for being a place, where a year-round rainfall is measured. Wonderful valleys and rivers increase the charm of Cherrapunji even more. To reach Cherrapunji, Guwahati is the nearest airport and Shillong is the capital city fir all the road transport services. This place can be visited throughout the year.
 
THE BOTANICAL GARDEN IN MEGHALAYA
It is located in the core area of Ward Lake. The regional vegetation and flowers of Meghalaya are found in this garden. Dominated by orchids and some of the rare species of colorful birds, it has become a favorite place for visitors coming over here.

GOLF COURSE IN MEGHALAYA
Set up in 1889, it is the third oldest golf course in India and the largest golf course in Asia. This eighteen hole golf course lies at an altitude of 5200 ft.  Being an ideal place for golf lovers, it is also popularly known as ‘Golfer’s Paradise’.

SHILLONG CATHEDRAL IN MEGHALAYA
It is also named as Cathedral Church of Mary Help of Christian. Built in 1913 by Germans it is the largest church in Meghalaya with excellent architectural works.

NARTIANG IN MEGHALAYA
Nartiang is located in the Jaintia hills district. With a diameter of 100 m,  Nartiang is a whole cluster of monoliths situated in the eastern part of Meghalaya, at a distance of 65kms from Shillong. The erection of Nartiang monoliths is regarded as one of the major events during the Jaintia era.

SHILLONG PEAK & SOHPETBNENG PEAK IN MEGHALAYA
These peaks are located 10kms and 20 kms away from the Shillong city respectively. Shilllong Peak is the highest point in Meghalaya with a height of 1961 m above the sea level. Magnificent landscapes with lush green forests make it a ideal tourist spot. The Sohpetbneng Peak is situated at a height of 1343 m above the sea level. WARD LAKE & UMIAM LAKE IN MEGHALAYA
Ward’s Lake is an artificial lake located in the Shillong city. It is also known as ‘Nan Polok’ or ‘Polok Lake’. Colorful flowers and pine trees are the major attraction of this 100 years old lake. Umiam Lake is situated 17 kms from the capital city Shillong. It is otherwise called ‘Barapani’. It is an ideal spot for water sport enthusiasts with facilities of sailing, boating, water skiing and many more.

Khasi hills are considered to be one of the best hills resort in India. Situated at the central part of Meghalaya, it has picturesque natural treasures with a pleasant and pollution free climate which attract tourist the most. Khasi hills are located close to Shillong city. Dawki, Lum Nehru Park and Umiam Lake are the nearest attractions. Jaintia hills are located at the Eastern part of the state of Meghalaya. WATERFALLS IN MEGHALAYA
Sweet fall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Meghalaya situated in the Happy Valley. Rengthiam fall is another cascading waterfall situated at a distance of 15 kms from Shillong. Primarily located in Mawlyngad, it is surrounded by the serene beauty of nature. Bishop and Beadon falls are two other very scintillating waterfalls located in Suna Valley. Elephant falls and Spread Eagle falls are other sparkling waterfalls in Meghalaya known for its glittering charm and serene atmosphere.

CAVES IN MEGHALAYA
Caves of Khasi hills, Jaintia hills and Garo hills are the special attraction for tourists visiting Meghalaya. Mawsmai Cave, Krem Mawmluh and Krem Dam are the notable caves of Khasi hills. Jaintia hills caves include Krem Kotsati and The Cave of Eocene age, which are dark and frightening too.  Bok Bak Dobhakol, Siju-Dobkhakol and Tetengkol-Balwakol caves are some of the longest and complex caves of Garo hills.

NATIONAL PARKS IN MEGHALAYA
Nokrek National Park and Balpakram National Park are the two prominent national parks in Meghalaya. Nokrek Biosphere Reserve is situated at a distance of 2 kms from the Tura Peak. The park is dominated with wide variety of flora and fauna. Mammals, reptiles and rare species of birds can be see here. Balpakram National Park was set up in the year 1987 with an altitude of 3000 ft. Exotic species of flora and fauna are found here. Animals like elephants, tigers, hillock gibbons attract the wildlife lovers.
 
How to reach Meghalaya
 
Travel to Meghalaya by Air:
The nearest major airport is located at Guwahati in Assam, which is about 128 Kms from Shillong. Guwahati is well connected to Kolkata, New Delhi, Baghdogra and Bangkok by regular flights. Taxis can be hired from Guwahati Airport to Shillong. There is a helicopter service from Guwahati Airport to Shillong.

Travel to Meghalaya by Rail: The nearest railhead is at Guwahati, which is located at a distance of 103 Kms from Shillong.

Travel to Meghalaya by Road: Meghalaya Transport Corporation and Assam State Transport Corporation buses are available, that frequently ply from Guwahati to Shillong
