Located in the Arabian Sea, some 200-300 kms away from the coast of Kerala, the Lakshadweep group of coral islands form one of the smallest union territories of India. Out of these 27 islands, only 10 are inhabited which are Andrott, Amini, Agatti, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmath, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Mincoy. Kavaratti is the headquarters of these islands while Bitra is the smallest of them all.
Agriculture is the mainstay of the Lakshadweep islands, the major products being coconut and coir. Coconut fiber extraction and conversion of its fiber products is the main industry here. Fishing, canning and processing factories, setting up of boat-building yards are other major activities. The islands stand first in India in per capita availability of fish.
The Lakshadweep islands are fast becoming a favourite tourist destinations with the availability of luxury cruises from Cochin. All tourists need permission to visit Lakshadweep, except those booked on cruises, in which case permission is automatic. Four of the inhabited islands (Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Minicoy and Kadmath) are open to Indians. Bangaram, an inhabited island, is open to both Indian and foreign tourists.
Ethnically, the people of these islands are very similar to the people of Kerala. A unique feature of the Lakshadweep islands is the absence of crime in these islands. The local people are friendly and hospitable to tourists.
Places to visit in the Lakshadweep Islands
Kavaratti Island
Amongst the various mosques, Ujra mosque is the most beautiful with an ornately carved ceiling. A well within its premises is believed to have curative powers. The aquarium with tropical fish and corals, the lake and the tombs are other delightful sights worth seeing on your tour of Kavaratti.
Andrott Island
People travel from far and near to visit the famous tomb of Hazrat Ubaidullah.
Minicoy Island
Farthest from Kavaratti (approximately 200kms away towards south) and nearest to the Maldives, this island has a lighthouse built by the British approximately hundred years ago. Also can be seen are the Buddhist archaeological remains which are worth a visit. One of the largest in Lakshadweep, this island has a cluster of 9 villages, which are known as Athinis. This island is also nearest to the Maldives.
Kadamat
The tourist huts, water sports facilities, fine lagoons, swimming activities makes this island a perfect beach holiday destination in India.
Kalpeni
Tourist facilities are available at Koomel. Kalpeni has three uninhabited islands, all surrounded by an immense lagoon rich in coral life,which is well worth travelling to visit.
Bangaram
Recently opened up for foreign tourists, this tear drop shaped island has exquisite coral formations including black coral and large variety of coral fish: the angel, the clown, the butterfly, the surgeon, the sweetlip, the snappers, the groupers, sharks, manta rays, sting rays, moray and turtles, which makes diving an unmemorable adventure. It is surrounded by one of the largest and safest lagoons in India, with clear, calm and cool, blue-green waters.
Water Sports facilities like sailing, kayaking, paddle boats, inflatable motorboats, tours on glass bottom boats (which offer an enchanting view of the coral below) and water skiing are available in Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Kadamat and Minicoy in the Lakshadweep Islands.
