Courtallam (Kutralam) Main Waterfalls is in Courtallam (Kutralam) at Tenkasi (Thenkasi) in Tirunelveli district, South Tamil Nadu. It has medicinal qualities, popularly called as the "Spa of the South.
History of Kutralam(Courtrallam)
Courtallam is known as the Spa of south and poor man's ooty. It is dedicated to Lord Thirukutralanathar (Siva). It is said that Lord Siva send saint Agastheyar to the south to avoid imbalance due to overcrowding in the mount Kailas on his celestial wedding. Another notable feature of Courttalam is Chithra Sabha (in which a number of mural paintings of rural deities and stories from epics are depicted in the central hall. This sabha is one of the five Sabas where Lord Nataraja performed the Cosmic-dance. Moreover this temple contains many inscriptions about Chola and Pandya Kings. Chitra Sabha is made out of medicinal herbs. The wooden carved planks serve as doors. Numerous rivers such as the Chittar River , the Manimuthar River , the Pachaiyar River and the Tambaraparani River originate here. It is famous for its waterfalls and has a number of health resorts.

Main falls is one of the natural and spectacular waterfalls in the world . It is well known for so many health reasons . The water flowing in this Podhigai Hills flows through a lot of herbs which are very good for health . This falls is in good flow of water during the months of June to December , during the monsoon months of south India . Major attraction of this falls is One can take bath in this natural and herbal water . One is supposed to drink copious amount of water while bathing . The water is very fresh and clean .
As soon as one takes bath there is total rejuvenation and you feel extremely hungry . Generally people before taking bath apply oil ( mainly sesame oil ) right from head to toe . At a time nearly 200 to 300 people can take bath . There are 2 seperate sections for ladies and gents. There are so many lingams and images of gods sculpted on the surface of the rocks over which water flows making it a divine falls . This water when taken continuously for 6 months can cure some of the digestive problems and also can cure urinary infections. In fact my gandma used to take this kutralam water in the season months and it helped her avoid urinary infctions . People who usually throng this place take bath here for 3 times a day just before every meal .
The town is accessible from both Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The nearest airport is located at Tuticorin which is around 85 km from the town. The airport is well connected to Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore . This is the best option for those who are arriving by air. There are taxis that can be hired from the airport to reach the place. Taxis charge around Rs 1000 for the trip and the drive takes around 1.5 hours.
The nearest railway station is located in Tenkasi, which is around 4 km from the place and Shengottai (Sengottai) railway station is located around 8 km from the Courtallam. Tirunelveli railway station is another option and there are frequent trains from most parts of the State. Taxis are available from the station and they cost between Rs 7 and RS 12 per km. it is advisable to hire A/C taxis during the summer months as the heat can be intense during this period.

Many trains are passing through Tenkasi railway station from Kollam to Thirunelveli and Manamadurai. Direct trains are also available from Kollam to Tenkasi and Shengottai. It is also 94 km from Kollam (Quilon), 40 km from Tirunelveli, 64 km from Rajapalayam, 137 km from Kanniyakumari, 152 km from Alleppey ( Alapuzha)and 640 km from Chennai
Since Courtallam is a major tourist spot, there are many government and private buses that are available from different cities. Buses from Tirunelveli to Courtallam are frequent and they are a good option. They start from the main bus terminus and tickets are cheap. Private buses might be more expensive and they are a comfortable option as well.
