Sultan Abdul Samad Building - Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia

Sultan Abdul Samad Building
The KL's signature landmark, overlooking the Dataran Merdeka or Merdeka Square which is a most popular spot for those who would like to enjoy a panoramic view of the city. Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad was built in 1897 to house the various administrative departments of the British Government at that time. Its Moorish features have attracted the interest of visiting historians and students of architecture. Today, the building houses the Supreme and High Courts and Infokraf, a center for Malaysian handicrafts.

Dataran Merdeka or Merdeka Square
Dataran Merdeka is a significant historic site as it was here that the British Union Jack was lowered for the last time when Malaysia gained its independence on 31st August 1957. A 100 meter-high flagpole, one of the tallest in the world, marks this spot. The square - formerly known as Padang - is the center of National Day celebrations. Surrounding the square are many buildings of historical interest including the Royal Selangor 
Merdeka Square - Kuala Lumpur - MalaysiaClub, a Tudor-style building built in 1910 which is situated on one corner of the square, where KL's elites meet; the Sultan Abdul Samad building, which is a great example of the Victorian-Moorish architecture common to Malaysian cities; the National History Museum and the Memorial Library, a building dating back to 1909; the St Mary's Cathedral, a Gothic style building which is more than a hundred years old; the impressive modern Dayabumi Complex; and beneath under the Dataran Merdeka is the Plaza Putra, an underground food, leisure and                 entertainment complex. The square is in the heart of KL downtown, near the convergence of the Klang and Gombak rivers.

Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Memorial
The Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Memorial, located at Jalan Dato' Onn, is dedicated to the memory of Malaysia's first Prime Minister, YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, who is also known as Malaysia's "Father of Independence". The memorial is housed in the grounds of the Tunku's former residence, where he resided first as Chief Minister and then as Prime Minister of the Federation. The exhibition space of the memorial covers 120,000 sq. meters and has massive collection of museum items including the Tunku's archived materials, mementos, books and letters. The memorial provides extensive information about the Tunku and his achievements.

Chinatown
KL's Chinatown is a crowded colorful mélange of signs, shops, activity and noise. The central section, Jalan Petaling, is a frantically busy market that is closed to traffic. It is most spectacular at night, when the combination of street stalls, food, haggling and bright lights makes impressions on all five senses. The old buildings - undergoing constant restoration by conservation groups - are interesting in themselves, while bargain-hunters and collectors of kitsch might be in luck as well. Chinatown is about 300m (330 yards) south-east of Merdeka Square.

Kuala Lumpur Textile Museum
The Kuala Lumpur Textile Museum showcases the rich heritage of Malaysia's arts and crafts, in particular, the local textile industry. It is located at he junction of Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin and Lebuh Pasar Besar, a short distance from the Dataran Merdeka.
Among the interesting exhibits on display are those on the art of batik making, the weaving of various indigenous materials such as songket, telepuk, kain gerus, pua and a diorama that portrays batik painting using the canting and pua weaving methods.
Fashionable clothes, the latest products and design collections including textiles of historical value are also on display.

National Museum of History
The National Museum of History is a former commercial bank dating back to 1910. The National Museum of History enables visitors to discover the wealth of Malaysia's historical heritage through its permanent exhibition of artifacts and materials. The Museum accumulates researches, collection, records and publications in regard to the nation's treasures. Exhibits include the 520 million-year-old metamorphic sandstone, a 4,000-year-old Homo sapiens skull and an eight-sided gold coin dating back to the 15th century.

National Rubber Museum
The National Rubber Museum is located at Sungai Buloh, about 10 kilometers from the city. The museum is housed in an old wooden building, reminiscent of the typical British plantation offices of the 1880s. Visitors to the museum will be able to trace the history of rubber from the time it was discovered, till it became the major crop supporting the Malaysian economy. Interesting exhibits are on display, from old-fashioned tapping knives to other common tools, used to extract rubber. Visitors can also watch demonstrations on how rubber is tapped and perhaps get a chance to try their hand at tapping.

Kuala Lumpur Railway Station - Kuala Lumpur - MalaysiaKuala Lumpur Railway Station

The Kuala Lumpur Railway Station is another Moorish-influenced feature in the city. Built in 1910, it was refurbished in 1986 when its old world grandeur was restored. The building houses the Heritage Hotel which offers a specially created ambience reflecting the pre independence era of old Malaya.


Masjid Jamek
Design by A.B Hubbock, a British architect, Masjid Jamek is evidence of Malaysia's large Indian-Muslim community. Built in 1909, the mosque sits serenely at the confluence of the Gombak and Klang Rivers. It features onion-shaped domes, arched colonnades and shiny, cool, marble floors.

National Mosque
This beautiful mosque sits on a 5.2 hectare plot close to the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. Green lawns, water fountains, pools and a modern design embody a contemporary expression of traditional Islamic art, calligraphy and ornamentation. Its most striking feature is the multi-fold umbrella-like roof and a 245-foot minaret.

Islamic Art Museum

The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia located at Jalan Lembah Perdana houses various themed galleries. Among the galleries found here is the Islamic Architecture Gallery which showcases miniature replicas of renowned buildings such as the Taj Mahal, Imam Ismail Albukhary Mosque and Museum and the Amir Timur Mausoleum. Apart from this gallery is the Standard Chartered Ottoman Room which displays objects from the reign of the Ottoman Empire of Turkey and Syria. In the Al-Quran and Manuscripts Gallery is a collection of more than 200 Islamic manuscripts which include a 30-Judz' Al-Quran from the Ming Dynasty.

National Planetarium - Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaNational Planetarium
The planetarium is situated atop a hill within the Lake Gardens close to the National Mosque, the National Museum and the Bird Park. Among the interesting features found with in the planetarium are the Space Theatre, Space Science Exhibition, Resource Center, Viewing Gallery and Ancient Observatory Park. The Space Theatre screens two shows daily the Space Science Show and Space Movie. There is also an observatory equipped with a 14-inch telescope.

Istana Negara
Istana Negara is the official residence of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, the King of Malaysia. It is located on a hillock a Jalan Istana on the fringe of the city center. Immaculately landscaped green terrace grounds that are ablaze with flowers all year round surround the palace. The palace is also the venue for state functions and ceremonies.

Sri Mahamariaman Temple
Located along Jalan Tun HS Lee, this temple is one of the most elaborate Hindu temples in the country. The temple has hundreds of intricate carvings of Hindu deities. Italian and Spanish tiles cover the walls of the interior. Built in 1873, it also houses a giant chariot that is used to transport a Hindu deity during the annual festival of Thaipusam. Visitors to the temple may have a chance to witness a fascinating traditional Hindu wedding or pooja (prayer ritual).

Thean Hou Temple
The Thean Hou Temple is located on a hill overlooking Jaland Syed Putra. It is said to be one of the largest Chinese temples outside China. The temple has interesting Oriental architecture composed of celestial dragons and other mythical creatures.

Kuala Lumpur Tower - MalaysiaKuala Lumpur Tower
The tallest in Asia and the fourth highest telecommunications tower in the world at a height of 421 meters - with superb panoramic views and the bird's eye view of the Klang Valley from the dizzying height of its observation deck or revolving restaurant. The tower also serves as a transmission station for telecommunications, radio and television.

Malaysia Tourist Information Complex (MATIC)
This complex, built in 1935, was once the residence of Eu Tong Seng, a wealthy Chinese miner and planter. It subsequently served as the war office of the British Army, the headquarters of the Japanese Army, the venue for first sitting of the Malaysian Parliament and also the installation ceremonies of several kings of the country. Extensive renovation works were carried out in 1988 to convert the building into tourist information complex.

Bird Park
The Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is the largest bird park in South East Asia. Many species of birds from around the world co-exist in an environment that has been carefully created to resemble their natural habitats.

Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens or Taman Tasik Perdana
The "green belt" - 91.6 hectares (227 acres) of planned parkland less than 1 km (0.6 mi) west of the central city - built in 1880s. The main focus of the park is Tasik Perdana - the Premier Lake - where locals and visitors cavort on                 the banks or in little paddle boats. It offers facilities such as a children's playground, jogging tracks, exercise stations and rowing boats. The Panggung Anniversari, set in a secluded valley within the park, is the venue for regular musical and cultural performances. Attractions in the park can be reached either on-foot, or by regular shuttle buses.

Petronas Twin Tower - Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaPetronas Twin Tower
Declared as Malaysia's and the world's tallest buildings, the Petronas Twin Towers, are the inspired symbol of Malaysia's new landmark to the world, situated in the north-west corner of the Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC) development. The buildings were built to house the headquarters of PETRONAS, Malaysia's national petroleum corporation. Soaring 452 meters up to the sky, the Petronas Twin Towers mark both in time and space an historic achievement and the national pride of Malaysia. These 88-story buildings are a testimony of the capabilities and determination of the Malaysian people in bringing to reality a project of such a mammoth scale, an engineering feat unparalleled in the country.

Orchid and Hibiscus Gardens Located in Taman Tasik Perdana, the Orchid Garden has over 800 species of exotic Malaysian orchids. Close by is the Hibiscus Garden with more than 500 varieties of rare and exotic blooms in a riot of colors and shades.
Butterfly Park
The Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park is located next to the Bird Park. It is home to 6,000 butterflies of over 120 Species. The park's environment is designed to resemble the natural habitat of the butterflies. More than 15,000 plants from 100 species have been used to recreate a Malaysian rainforest atmosphere. There is a nursery and breeding area for the butterflies.


Deer Park
The Deer Park is located close to the Lake Gardens. The park has been created to provide a natural habitat for deer which include hinds, does and fawns. Visitors to the park will be able to watch these graceful creatures from a close distance and even feed them by hand. The mousedeer, which is the smallest hoofed animal in the world, can also be spotted near the streams that run along the park.


Taman Tasik Titiwangsa
Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, another green lung, is located in the northeastern fringe of the city. It is a placid lakeside garden and has facilities for jogging, workout stations and a restaurant by the lake. There are also facilities for canoeing and aqua biking.


National Monument
This striking bronze monument, located at Lake Gardens, was constructed in 1966. It was designed by Felix de Weldon, the same architect who created the Iwo Jima Memorial Monument in Washington. The 15.54 meter high monument is a memorial to honor the members of the Malaysian Security Forces who died in action during the Emergency- a twelve struggle against communist insurgency that ended in 1960.


Tun Abdul Razak Memorial
Further down the road from the Deer Park is the Tun Abdul Razak Memorial, once the official residence of Malaysia's second Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak bin Dato' Hussein, who was popularly known as "The Father of Development". The memorial houses a vast collection of his personal and official memorabilia, gathered during his tenure as Prime Minister from 1970-1976.


Parliament House
Standing on elevated ground, commanding a panoramic view of the Lake Gardens is Parliament House. This 18-story building has a library, a banquet hall as well as dining and committee rooms. The various sections of the building are interspersed with indoor gardens and pools. Visitors who wish to visit Parliament House can make prior arrangements with the relevant authorities.

National Science Center
The national Science Center is located atop a hill in Bukit Kiara on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. The building is designed in the shape of cone with its top removed and the whole structure is covered with a huge geodesic dome. It is equipped with an Intelligent Building Automation System and its exhibition gallery occupies two floors with a total area of 6,717.6 sq. meters, a multimedia library, lecture theater, multi-purpose hall and cafeteria.


Bank Negara Money Museum
Located in the Bank Negara building at Jalan Dato' Onn, the Money Museum has an interesting display of old Malaysian currency, commemorative coins, rare coins and foreign currencies.


The National Museum
The National Museum is located at the fringe of Taman Tasik Perdana along Jalan Travers, close to the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. Designed to resemble a Malay palace, its impressive façade of two large murals each depicting scenes of Malaysian history and crafts, reflects the colorful heritage of the country. The museum houses several galleries containing an impressive collection of artifacts on local history, culture and customs, arts and handicraft, economic activities, flora and fauna, weapons and currencies. Outdoor static displays include old locomotive, vintage cars and replicas of ancient Malay palaces.


Armed Forces Museum
The museum is located on the grounds of the Ministry of Defense at Jalan Padang Tembak. Here, the visitor will be able to catch a glimpse of Malaysia's military exhibits such as historical pictures, uniforms and decorations of the Malaysian armed forces, the Malaysian armory, naval guns, artillery, old canons, military aircraft and vehicles.


National Art Gallery
The gallery is located at Jalan Temerloh, off Jalan Tun Razak. The displays include works of local and international artists, sculptures and designs.


Kuala Lumpur Memorial Library
A magnificent double-story colonial style building, it serves both as a public library and resource center. It provides reference materials and information on the history of Kuala Lumpur.






The National Theater
Permanent home of the National Theater Company and the National Symphony Orchestra, the National Theater is responsible for the development of all forms of theatrical art in Malaysia.
Designed as a functional building which not only reflects the beauty of form, the National Theater is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment while still retaining the national heritage and traditional Malay design. Drama, dance and musical performances are held regularly.
