Tourist Attractions in Uttaranchal (or Uttarakhand)


Uttaranchal (or Uttarakhand) is a state which is bestowed with aplenty natural beauty. The location of the state is such that it is bounded by Nepal in the North, Madhya Pradesh in the South, Delhi in West and Bihar in the East.

The most important destinations include Dehradun, Mussoorie, Nainital and Ranikhet. Apart from these, the state is the source of the holiest river of India i.e. the Ganges. The state holds trekking training camps and other adventure sports.

Uttaranchal is also famous for its Shopping centers which include Dehradun, Nainital and Mussoorie. The experience of shopping in Dehradun and Nainital is very different from other places of the country.


Uttaranchal, known as the abode of god, is a tourist’s perfect delight. From its snowy mountain ranges to the white gushing water in its rivers, it is the picture of tranquility and perfection. It makes for a holiday hot spot as it offers something to every tourist, whether it is adventure sports such as trekking, skiing and rafting to wildlife safaris to holy pilgrimages, the list goes on. Tourists can enjoy the view of picturesque hills, which consist of the western part of the Himalayan ranges.

Uttaranchal is separated into two major regions according to cultural differences - Garhwal and Kumaon. The Garhwal division includes seven districts including Dehradun the capital, whereas the Kumaon division has six districts under it.

Kumaon 

Nestled in the hills of the magnificent Himalayas, the Kumaon region attracts many a tourist all year long. Nainital is a tranquil region located in this division. It is characterized by a scenic view of the hills and a charming lake.

A main attraction in the region of Kumaon is the Corbett National Park and Tiger Reserve which was set up in 1936. It was the first park set up of its kind and is very popular and well known. Kausani is another tourist hot spot that is recognized for its dense forests and picturesque view of the Nanda Devi mountain range. Other familiar hill stations in the area are Binsar and Chaukori.

One can also enjoy nature’s beauty and adventurous activities at Munsyari. If you are a religious person you might want to visit the famous Narayan Ashram and Mayawati Ashram present here. Pilgrimages are made by devotees to various places of religious interest present in this region, the main places being Jageshwar, Patal Bhuvaneshwar, Meetha Reetha Shahib, and Nanakmatta. Also, for more adventurous pilgrims there is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the Chota Kailash Yatra. If you are adventurous but not religious you could go trekking as there are many trekking routes. Lots of fairs and festivals also take place like the Nanda Devi mela and Bagwal. Pithoragarh, known as ‘little Kashmir’, is a small town ideal for mountaineers, pilgrims and sightseers alike.

Garhwal 

Garhwal is scenic region located right in the middle of the Himalayas with the river of Ganga and Yamuna bordering it. Dehradun is the most popular tourist attraction in this region. It is usually described as delightful and divine and has the towns of Rishikesh and Mussoorie in it. Rishikesh is a major pilgrim hub with its temples and ashrams but also caters to the adventurous with its river rafting activities. Mussoorie known as the queen of hill stations is strikingly beautiful with its attractive view of the mountain ranges. 


The famous Maha Khumbh Mela takes place at Haridwar which attracts lakhs of devotees. It is known as the ‘gateway to god’ and is considered one of the most holy places of the Hindus. Tehri Garhwal is a major tourist place in Uttaranchal, located in the outer ranges of the Himalayas and is famous for the Tehri Dam and Tehri Lake. The main religious centers popular among pilgrims are Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath. Together these four holy places are termed as ‘Char Dham’.

Chamoli covers several religious spots, scenic rivers and imposing snow clad mountain peaks, which is pleasurable for tourists who love adventure. The valley of flowers is major tourist destination in Chamoli. Here tourists can witness hundreds of different flower species and experience the beauty of nature at its best.


Places places to see in Uttaranchal

Almora
The temple of Kaushik Devi on the Kashyap Hill is located here. According to the Puranas, Kaushiki Devi appeared from the body of Goddess Parvati to kill the demons Shumbh-Nishumbh.

Badrinath
Bardrinath is situated at an altitude of about 10, 500 feet above sea-level and at a distance of 384 km from Hardwar. Important places on the route from Rishikesh are Muni-ki-Reti, Dev Prayag and Kirtinagar. Important places on the route from Kotdwar are Pauri, Srinagar, Rudra Prayag, Kama Prayag, Nand Prayag, Chamoli and Pipalkoti.  

Baijnath
Baijnath is a picturesque town having a cluster of temples on the bank of the Baijnath sarovar or pond. A beautiful image of Parvati is installed in the main temple.

Bhimgoda Kund
Bhimgoda Kund is also among the religious places around Hardwar. It belongs to the Pandava-age and was created by the hoof of Bhim's horse.

Chakrata
It is a quiet, peaceful place and a health-giving hill resort. Beautiful snow-clad peaks can be viewed from here. One can reach Chakrata easily from Dehra Dun.

Corbett National Park
The Corbett National Park is renowned all over the world for its scenic beauty and wild life. It has the distinction of being the first national park of India.

Gangotri
The Gangotri Bhagirathi temple is situated near the sacred rock on which King Bhagirath used to worship Lord Shiva and where the Bhagirathi first descended on the earth from the Heavens. It is believed that later on the Pandavs came here and performed the Mahadev Yajna. The Bhagirathi flows for some distance from here towards the north and, hence, this place is known as Gangotri. The Bhagirathi Temple was built by the Gorkha Comander-in-Chief Amar Singh Thapa at the beginning of the 18th century.

Hardwar
Hardwar is the place where the mountainous course of the Ganga, the most holy river of the Hindus, ends and it enters the plains. It is a prominent centre of Hindu pilgrimage. In Sanskrit literature, it is referred to as Mayaapuri of Maya Kshetra. Some have named it as Tapovan or Gangadwar. It is also called Kapila after the Sage Kapil. There are several temples and shrines here and a dip in the holy 'Har-ki-Pauri' has been described a sure way to salvation.

Kalsi
It is situated on the banks of the Yamuna in the northern part of Dehra Dun district. Here Ashokan edicts are inscribed in Pali on a small rock.

Kedarnath
The Kedarnath Temple is situated at a height of about 11, 500 feet above sea-level under the Kedarnath Mandal. Main pilgrim centres on this route are Vashistha Gufa, Vyas Ghat, Dev Prayag, Kirtinagar, Srinagar, Rudra Prayag, Agastya Muni, Chandrapuri,guptkashi, Triyugi Narayan and Gauri Kund.

Kaliyar
In Kaliyar, some distance away from Roorkee, is the Dargah of Shah Ali-ud-din Sabir, popularly known as Pir-e-Kaliyar.

Mussoorie
It is  the most picturesque hill station of Uttaranchal. It is known as the queen of hill resorts. There is also a rope-way for the convenience of the tourists. Mussoorie, with its green hills and varied flora and fauna, is a facinating hill resort. Commanding snow ranges to the north-east, and glittering views of the Doon Valley and Shiwalik ranges in the south, the town presents a fairyland atmosphere. Mussoorie is famous for its scenic beauty.

Rishikesh
According to common belief, this beautiful place was very dear to Lord Shiva. It is said that it was here that Lord Vishnu killed the demon Madhu-Kaitabh. Rishikesh is situated on a huge rock on the banks of the Ganga.

Yamunotri
This place is situated on the west side of the lofty mountain peak called Bandarpoonchh at a height of 4, 421 metres above sea-level. This peak is covered with snow. It is said that Asit Muni had his hermitage here and throughout his life, he used to bathe daily both in the Yamuna and Ganga rivers. When he became unable to go to Gangotri with the approach of old age, a spring of Ganga waters appeared among the pieces of rock in the Yamunotri. The Yamuna Temple is the main place of worship here. Close to the temple are many hot water springs where boiling water gushing from mountain caves accumulates in ponds. The most prominent among them is the Surya Kund. The people dip rice and potato wrapped in a piece of cloth and after some time it is fully cooked, which is brought back as 'Prasad'. Close to Surya Kund is the rock known as Divya Shila which is worshipped first, before worshipping Yamunotri.

Garhwal
The Garhwal Himalayas area is remote and mountainous, filled with oak forests and alpine meadows. The forests are home to a number of endangered animal species and have historically been managed by local community institutions.

Kumaon
Kumaon is a beautiful region in the newly formed state Uttaranchal. It is in the northern side of Uttar pradesh. Kumaon is derived from “Kurmanchal” which means the Land of the Kurmavtar (the tortoise incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Preserver of Mankind as per Hindu religion. Kumaon consists of six Districts Almora, Nainital, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Champawat and Udhamsingh Nagar. Kumaon is situated in Central Himalayas. Himalaya in the north, “Kali” river in east, Garwal in the west and Plain area in south make the typial boundry of this region.

Nainital
